Review

While Sloane has been acknowledged in histories of the British Museum and of collecting, it is harder to step back in time and give an accurate picture of his mind-set and that of his age. In this, working from Sloane's manuscripts and from the surviving objects themselves ...Delbourgo has triumphantly succeeded ...But Delbourgo takes us further. In rescuing Sloane from amnesia, he has given a double-edged account that upends the conventional understanding of the early Enlightenment and indeed the Enlightenment Museum itself ...Delbourgo's challenging analysis shows how complex the cultural origins of the British Museum in fact were(Jenny Uglow, New York Review of Books) Delbourgo's book is both a magnificent scholarly coup and an enthralling read ...it conveys the excitement of original research as well as the thrill of tracking exotic curiosities to their source (John Carey, The London Sunday Times)Delbourgo's deft and capable history of Sloane's legacy is deeply necessary as museums face our complicated histories and consider how to move forward (Suzanne Fischer, Los Angeles Review of Books) Important ...the great merit of Delbourgo's work is to chronicle the culture and politics that stood behind those Enlightenment claims of extending human understanding. (Tristram Hunt, Director of the Victoria & Albert Museum, in The Times -- Book of the Week) Meticulous and thrilling (Ben Street, Art Quarterly)Revealing and witty (Peter Parker, Apollo Magazine) It has been a long wait -- but James Delbourgo's new life of Sloane was certainly worth waiting for ...a superb book, enjoyably written, beautifully illustrated, and based on deep knowledge of the sources (Sir Noel Malcolm, The Sunday Telegraph)Delbourgo is admirable in his reading ...of slavery and natural history ...[his] biography is a prodigious contribution to our understanding ...[and] a fitting tribute to [Sloane's] contradiction-riven life. Collecting the World ...teaches us about how we know, how we organize and discipline our knowledge, by the specimen of this strange, cruel, and single-minded gentleman doctor of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Josephine Livingstone, New Republic)Deeply learned and highly readable ...Curiosity and collecting were central to science in Sloane's lifetime, and Delbourgo does a remarkable job of showing how these practices were bound up with slavery and imperial expansion (John Gallagher, Irish Times)[A] rich and masterly new biography [of] the greatest collector of his age ...Delbourgo's prose is by turns luscious and breathless, penetrating and precise, reveling in the dance of tastes, scents and colours, and the interplay of themes and voices. His triumph ...is to show his readers the Enlightenment for what it was: the grandest of dreams and the greatest of follies (Richard Barnett, The Lancet)Meticulously researched ...not just a biography of a remarkable man but a compelling account of the time in which he lived ...a thoroughly good read (Charlotte Heathcote, The Daily Express, London)In this magnificent book, [James] Delbourgo proves himself a match for his subject ...a fascinating analysis (David Gelber, Country Life Magazine)Engrossing ...Based on prodigious research, Collecting the World mirrors the various facets of Sloane's interests, and his story is told with asophisticated attention to a world that oscillated between fact andfable (Bruce Boucher, New York Times Book Review)Riveting ...[a work of] courage and clarity ...The Sloane heritage, Delbourgo concludes, is a troubling one. But it is a mark of the author's deft touch that he manages to capture the excitement and novelty of 18th-century collecting while holding it to account (Jacqueline Yallop, BBC History Magazine)Delbourgo's purpose, superbly achieved, is to give us Sloane not as an individual but as a small piece in the great puzzle of the Enlightenment project, to explore through him the strange birth of modern knowledge (Frances Wilson, London Evening Standard)Absorbing ...approachable yet authoritative ...a major book. Delbourgo has at last given us a readable and entertaining single-volume account of Sloane's life and legacy ...it deserves to be widely read (Michael Hunter, Literary Review)This book succeeds in paying tribute to the man who was a living embodiment of [British power's] global reach, but it never shirks from exposing the dark side of his story: his unashamed acceptance of slavery as the engine of his wealth (Ysenda Maxtone-Graham, the Daily Mail -- Book of the Week)How to think about Sloane is not always an easy task; but James Delbourgo masterfully brings [his] world to life, illuminating the British collector's personal sphere along with the 17th and 18th century world he inhabited... [A] superb telling of the narrative... [T]his first-rate book of Delbourgo's shows not just the life of Hans Sloane and the inception of the British Museum, but our intricately connected world and the way its objects - and their often visceral stories - tie us together (Brett Miller, PopMatters)

Hans Sloane is now largely forgotten. But he is worthy of remembrance, since the hyper-collector Mr.Sloane was the founding spirit to the British Museum. This hefty book by the academic James Delbourgo gives most of its space to the far flung and heterogeneous collecting activities of the wealthy London doctor, with a nice ending explaining the exact origins of the British Museum. Hans Sloane, himself, remains a some what elusive character given the evidence provided here. Those who enjoy collecting, public museums, and the early history of the British Empire will enjoy this effort.

This book provides very valuable background information on the development of natural history.

Some great stories; but the illustrations were lacking or boring.

Interesting because most people have not heard of Hans Sloane and what he achieved.
