Jackson and Kate have given us a beautiful book full of thoughtful tips for making our cats' lives happier, and our homes happier for them. There's a "system" -- based on cat behavior in general, and specific likes and dislikes of individual cats; for example, some cats like to climb (build shelves up high) and some cats like to be down low (place cocoons on the floor). It includes clear illustrations of traffic flow to avoid conflict among cats, and plenty of inspirational photos. The book includes lots of DIY tips which are pretty detailed, although in some cases not quite detailed enough.All in all a big step forward for cats, whose needs have been rather neglected compared to our canine friends. BUT . . . there's a glaring omission -- where are the cat litter boxes? If the idea is to make the home a haven for indoor cats, so they're not exposed to the dangers of the outdoors, then necessarily there must be cat boxes, and there's nary a mention. Jackson highlights the "catification" he did in his former tiny apartment with 3 cats, but if he follows his stated recommendation of 1 box per cat plus 1 -- it's left me wondering, does he really have 4 litter boxes in that 500 sf space? Where? What about the people with 11 cats that have built elaborate climbing shelves all over the house -- do they have wall to wall litter boxes in a spare bedroom or what? We need creative solutions for this part too, please.
I did not know there were so many things that you could inexpensively do to keep your cat(s) entertained while still giving them lots of room to claim their own space. Great photos! Also, I love the "Cat from Hell" series that can be found on the Animal Planet channel. Even though it was not through Amazon, I did try out two of Jackson's kitty toys. Boy, was I surprised at how much my cats liked them! Thanks, Jackson!
This book gave us all the tools to develop a happy cohesive household. This book taught us how to assess our cats needs and really understand them in a way we never had before. The design tools and examples gave us so many ideas and the confidence to truly give our cats spaces just for them. We also learned how much adding simple design to our home with the cats in mind could change the dynamic of the cats. This is such a great read and will be useful to reference.
If you have an indoor cat(s), you probably realize how important it is that she have places indoors where she can climb and scratch and that otherwise make up for what she's missing outdoors. But we want our homes to be decorated for us, not our cats, right? With CATIFICATION you can, as its subtitle says, design a happy and stylish home for your cat and you.But be sure to begin by reading Part 1 in order to first understand what catification is. You'll learn how important this is to your cat as well as to you.Then you'll probably see your home differently. I do. Now I look at everything in my rooms in relation to possible catification: "cat superhighways," "dead ends," scratching posts that double as climbing ramps and stairs, "cat bridges," and "kitty TV." And I can't wait until this spring, when the snow is gone and the weather is warm, so my husband and I can build a "catio."If only CATIFICATION was around when my cat was alive! With every page, I couldn't help but think about how it would apply to her. But I'm going to get another cat now, and this time I'll do it right.
I just finished reading this book and once again Jackson leaves me with more insight and knowledge on my four legged friends. I have multiple rescued cats at home and occasionally have some fights breaking out in my apartment. The answer is so simple. This book several easy to implement examples. One couple in the Netherlands even screwed their cat furniture to the roof-freeing up the living room floor and creating a whole world for the cats above the owners' heads. Brilliant!Most of the solutions presented here are fairly easy to do. Most materials can be picked up at a local hardware store or Ikea. Creativity and recycling are also encouraged. This book; however, isn't just a collection of projects. It teaches you how your cats think- keeping in mind the natural world cats should be in- and then asks you to then creatively accommodate their needs. The examples are just a way to get started. Once you understand what you're doing for your cats, the rest comes easy.
I bought this on a whim when I was plagued with anxiety about adding a dog to our two-cat family. It's an interesting book but doesn't really bring anything new that isn't on the website or show. I did learn some things about cat behaviors, such as types of hiding places and what they mean in regards to your cat's personality/fears. Also, I got this as a kindle book which was probably a dumb idea as it probably works better as a physical book because of all the photos etc.
I run a small cat shelter and found some very helpful hints and ideas. I have one cat that does not like being on the ground and is intimidated by another cat. As a result of reading the book, I purchased two floor to ceiling cat poles with 3 platforms for the cats to sit upon. It has helped my "tree dweller" feel more confident to the point that she no longer has to spit at her rival - she just gets over his head and stares down at him. I have other "project cats" that need special attention that I will use the book to assist me with meeting their needs. I love the amount and variety of catification suggestions - it leaves you with unlimited ideas and a good sense of what an indoor cat needs to feel safe and comfortable.
