"The ways of white folks, I mean some white folks, is too much for me," says Berry. Marvelous line! This is a must read by any American who wants to better understand where we've been and, perhaps, why we're here. Mr. Hughes was a poet who has been called the poet laureate of the Harlem Renaissance. With good reason. His prose is a delight. Check out his poem, "I, Too." Langston Hughes was a major American author whose work deserves a place right alongside Hemingway and Fitzgerald.

A disturbing and painful collection of stories that nevertheless brilliantly portrays the realities of life for African Americans in the United states. Hughes' eloquent prose is a poignant and powerful account with perspectives from both black and white. Though his writing is direct and brightly worded, there are also hints and shadows that require the reader to read between the lines and to be alert and discerning in order to capture the full impact of his brilliant writing.

My only problem with this book is that it is sometimes too painful and I became apprehensive about each new story. Would the main character be killed? So it's a painful but very engrossing read. And it doesn't always end badly

I thought that this was a novel. Turns out to be a collection of short stories. Each one just as good as the last. Each story focuses on the interrelationships between Blacks and Whites during the Harlem Renaissance era. Many stories have a theme of well intentioned Whites inadvertently being offensive. It's not a race bashing book, rather a sociological perspective of race relations in the early 20th century.

Stories of black and white folks who lived in the 1920s and 30s. Surprising plots and stories, unusual characters. Langston Hughes is one of the best writers of the 20th century. You must read his stories and poems. His ability to grab the reader and not let go is astounding. His characters are real and compelling. Don't miss this.

This book was a great read for any African American. The last story was gut wrenching but accurately described tensions during that time. I highly recommend this book for anyone. Know your history so you can better know your future.

Great expose of black life in the twentieth century.

If you have already read novels by Langston Hughes then you probably already love him. For those who have not, this collection of short stories is a perfect introduction. His portrayal of life for black people in the pre-civil rights era is dramatic, sometimes touching, occasionally heart-breaking, even at times quite funny. Any person of any age or race can find a great deal of enjoyment in this sophisticated, yet easy to read volume.
