This book is written by former White House Social Secretaries, Lea Berman and Jeremy Bernard, who served during the Bush (43) and Obama administrations, respectively. Having absolutely no personal experience in politics or relationship with anyone in Washington, I probably would not have given the book a second look except for the fact that the title contained the word “civility”, which is in short supply these days, and I was intrigued by what two such partisans might agree on. Or perhaps I was subconsciously looking for a mud fight, which I most definitely did not find. This is a book about civility, not etiquette. “In this book, we share the lessons that made us better at our jobs and, at the same time, happier in our lives.” And that’s exactly what they do. “There is real power in civility because it’s about so much more than etiquette.” And why, no matter what you do for a living, this book is written for you. “So much of success, however you define it, hangs on how we treat others from all walks of life.” How true that is.My primary observation about the book is that the authors took their task very seriously. It would have been easy to just slap down a few inside stories and collect the royalties from sales to all of the political insiders who undoubtedly want to see if they are mentioned. That is not at all what this work is, however. While the advice may not rise to the level of earth shattering, it is earth changing. It is spot on, extremely well organized, and developed with an open mind and from a lot of experience. This was a book that took considerable effort in the making. The writing is very crisp, you can’t miss the salient points and themes, and each chapter builds on the prior chapters. Just what you'd expect from two very organized people.A few of my favorite tidbits:“Insisting on your own importance rarely works.”“By creating a template of how we should behave on the outside, they shape who we are on the inside.”“…the most effective leaders emanate self-assurance, not self-importance.”“There is no trust without consistency.”My favorite: “There is an established correlation between listening and leadership.” And, “We live in a world of constant communication but lackluster listening.”All told, this is a very worthy read by two people who come off the page as competent, professional, and very human. Whoever you are and whatever reason you are looking for a book to read, I am quite sure you will both enjoy it and learn from it.

The perfect book to start 2018 with! Berman and Bernard share thoughtful and useful methods for bettering our interactions with with everyone, and expound on the value of treating people well, something that has become a bit of a lost art in recent years. Their advice is illustrated with funny and intimate stories from their time behind the scenes at the White House, which entertains and amuses even as it teaches valuable lessons. A book I will reference many times in the future, and already look forward to reading again!

I absolutely loved reading this book and the stories about some of the First Families. But I also liked how important it is to treat all people with respect, kindness, and dignity and that it comes out very strongly. I would urge every one to read this book.

Ironic that this book comes out at a tumultuous time where what currently comes out of the White House is much the opposite of treating people well. However, this book gives a great behind-the-scenes view of White House life over the past 16 years, while teaching very simple principles about being considerate and diffusing conflict with others. Thankfully the book does very little to discuss politics and focuses more on behaviors.Too many non-fiction books gush about the "method" the author created, and are illustrated with too many hypotheticals and scenarios where it's easy to get lost. This book simply illustrates principles through true stories with dignitaries and celebrities, which stick with you when you aren't reading it. I read it with my wife, and we found many different topics to discuss over meals, along with goals and desires to implement some of the principles discussed in the book.A full read takes 7-10 hours for most people. I highly recommend it.

Written by former White House Social Secretaries, Lea Berman and Jeremy Bernard. A must read for everyone, regardless of party affiliation. Jeremy and Lea bring back the honor of the White House. It's wonderfully written but the best message is that everyone deserves to be treated well. The authors take us backstage of the White House but it is filled with Life Lessons and reminders that apply to us all.

First, this book was not what I expected. I must not have been paying attention, but I had no idea it was written by two former White House social secretaries. Those types of details rarely slip past me, but they did this time. I purchased the book because I was looking for ways to prove that being nice at work does not mean one cannot succeed. Being cutthroat is not always the answer. Second, this book was exactly what I expected. It proved the point and then some. This is a book that discusses, in detail, how treating people well — both those you work for, with and in attendance to — is the one way to really show respect and job knowledge. Chapter after chapter, this book, and the two authors, used anecdotes from their positions in the White House to highlight their thesis statement. It was wonderfully written and fun to read, but also a great book for anyone who works with the public (or another human being).

Excellent book. Great information about how being respectful and kind can help you get ahead. The stories about their time as social secretaries were so interesting. It's lovely to see two people from different parties collaborating and showing the common ground. I highly recommend this book.

It is such a beautiful book. I tear up thinking of the loss of civility in these trying times. Thank you for giving me hope of how wonderful the world can be when leaders show true caring and respect toward others.
