This is a book because it has covers and some art inside, that's true. If you think you'll be able to actually read it to your child though, adjust your expectations. While I appreciate the pop-up art, the words of the story are written under and among the art making it impossible to enjoy in any way other than to appreciate the pop ups. My child wants to hear me read the words that are clearly on the page, but I have to tell him that I can't because they are only fragments of stories. I think to make this a complete experience, it would need to come with a companion booklet with at least a rudimentary story for each section. This is a bit of a Frankenstein of an experience and did not satisfy my 6 year old child and managed to make bed time an unexpectedly frustrating time for his parent. I'm annoyed that I spent so much money on it and I wish I could send it back. Perhaps I can.

First off, as other reviewers have pointed out this book is NOT MEANT to be read but to be laughed at and enjoyed! Only the first 2 pages are readable, the rest like Cinderella and Hansel and Gretal have the wording making up the dress or the witches house! I like the dragon's reactions to Cinderella, "Nice shoes" and to Hansel and Greatal, "You don't want to know what kind of sweet tooth SHE has."In Snow White's funeral the dragon interupts the mourning by saying,"She'll be fine, trust me..." and Snow White opens one eye! The contrast of the whimsical fairy tale characters and the "cartoony " dragon and knight among the fairy tale text is a delight! The chase goes on thru the fairy tales including ALLADIN and here is where I ran into a snag, the pop up opens up well but is hard to close up before the last pages have the surrprise ending! I have the ALLADIN pages closed up well for now, but when I reopen them they'll be tricky to close again!UPDATE: I have cut the wings off the dragon and moved them to a higher spot above the shoulders so now they completly close up inside the book! So now the Aladdin pages close up well!As in Sendak's Rhinehardt's MOMMY Sabuda has a funny twist ending but not all the pop-up mechanics move smoothly but it still has a lot to offer! It's a CUTE book! Now I suggest SABUDA AND RHINEHARDT make a version of SHAKESPEARE'S MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT'S DREAM! It would be the first pop up version of the Bard's renowned play! The pop up possibilities are enormous and their FAIRIES AND MAGICAL CREATURES pop up encycopedia was a big hit! Their Titania is beautiful! It would have to be a pared down version but the highlights would be magical!

After reading so many good reviews i was delighted to order this, since we call my son our Little Dragon. The illustrations are beautiful, but this book is so fragile it won't be read by him for a long time.....if at all since there is basically no story. The images on placed on top of the words & only after re"reading" the story (and some reviews) did i get the chasing through stories thing. Not what i was hoping for at all.

Really disappointed in this one... We LOVE Robert Sabuda's pop up books but not this one. The pop ups are beautiful so if that's all you're buying it for, I definitely suggest getting it. But if you're getting it to actually read it, don't bother. Unfortunately it's not readable... The pop ups are arranged in a way that male the book impossible to actually read. Even if you move them out of the way. We're returning the book

I had this book on autobuy, happy to have the small discount that followed as the price dropped.Ten pages of full pop-ups, this book differs somewhat with no smaller supportive pop-up mechanisms that fill negative space left on the page by large feature pop-ups. The artwork is competent, the background is printed pages of common fairy tales intended not to be read but to give the impression the knight and the dragon running through children's books. The overall book is smaller than usual. Sabuda's cleverness is apparent on every page, each mechanisms has some little hook that makes it unique to this book, common pop-up techniques used in unique ways to flip arms, match flows of hair, create a damaged tower, make the roof wrap a house along the central fold upon closing, have a dragon's head turn backward to address the knight, pop up a character on the opposite side of the page with connections beneath the page, dialogue between the knight and dragon appear in place from opposite sides, and have a dragon blow fire right at you. As always, taken to extreme of paper potential, nearly every pop-up does need some help closing properly lest horns and arms and and random bits become improperly folded.I'm rough on my pop-ups, mine broke! In two places, Sabuda decides to have the full weight of extended mechanism, mechanism upon mechanism upon mechanism, depend on the flimsiest of V connections where it breaks. They break when you are rough on books as I am. The Rapunzel page on my copy broke at the center where two sides of the V are glued, came apart. Re-glued now it is perfect. While the Puss In Boots page has the same problem at the same spot was taped with cellophane on both sides where the V connects recto and verso, now it's perfect.I love repairing Sabuda pop-ups. But I don't like the way the roof of Rapunzel's tower tips backward. I can see the piece that makes it so. It is built correctly (In some remote foreign land), built to lean backward, but I'd prefer it to stand up better with the Dragon's dialogue still facing forward. The brace can be slightly extend to tilt the roof upward and forward but I must damage Saubda's work to have it, by cutting the brace and inserting a short spacer. So I will.

The first purpose of a book is that it be readable. This is a gorgeous-looking thing, but the text is deliberately scrambled among, around, and under the pop-ups so it can't actually be read aloud (or at all). So that was disappointing and frustrating for your kids, who were so excited to hear the story, and for us, who had to explain we couldn't actually read all those words (at least not in a way that makes sense as a story). Recommend the ad copy for this book make it clear this is a book for looking at, not for reading.
